History: Susan B. Anthony Dollar

The United States Mint introduced the Susan B. Anthony dollar originally in 1979. They had strong hopes that this new smaller version dollar coin would do well and commonly circulate in the United States and become common like a quarter. The Treasury Department actually hoped that it would be so accepted by the public that it would be able to eliminate the one dollar paper currency and thus save millions of dollars each year in manufacturing costs.

The coin also honors a well-known pioneer in the woman’s rights movement as she was a pioneer and leader in helping women gain the right to vote. In October of 1978, US legislation provided for the issuance of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin. Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at the time Frank Gasparro, designed both the obverse and the reverse. His initials are located on the obverse near the lower right side of the portrait. This coin was the first time that a portrait of a real/actual woman (as opposed to a figure of Lady Liberty) appeared on a United States common coin.

However, it did not go as planned.  You see the small format which was created for the dollar to be less intrusive than the large former dollar coins created an issue they did not expect.  People instead easily confused the new one dollar coin with a quarter and therefore this mistake cost people money and let to them being rejected by the public and merchants. Thus the demand for the coin dropped, and production was eventually ceased in 1981.

Due to a request from the United States Postal Service, the mint produced another run of one dollar coins in 1999. In the following year 2000, the mint introduced the new “Golden Dollar” with Sacajawea on the obverse.
