Australian Silver Koala — 2016 .999 One-Ounce Bullion and Later Standards
The 2016 Australian Silver Koala ordinary one-ounce bullion coin contains one fine troy ounce of .999 silver. The dated Perth Mint brochure gives a minimum gross mass of 31.135 g. This illustrated calculation identity is the 2016 issue; later .9999 Koalas and other sizes retain separate specifications. Read the entire year, denomination and silver legend before counting a holding.

When a fresh spot bid is available, melt values use fine-metal content × spot bid. CashForCoins guide buying offers use the separately configured percentage for each metal. Selected rare/numismatic coins require an appraisal. Dollar amounts remain unavailable when a fresh quote or buying percentage is missing.

Exact reviewed annual issue dates for this assigned metal/weight scope. Mint, design, overdate and finish combinations remain type-specific; broader headings do not fill absent annual rows. Source precision exceptions and separate alloy standards are explained in the guide. This identity covers the 2016 .999 standard only; later .9999 Koalas remain separate.

Calculate this coin’s metal content
Formula: specified fine-metal troy ounces × quantity. Dollar melt value additionally requires an approved current metal price.
Obverse: identify the front
The 2016 obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley’s right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the Australian issuer name and one-dollar denomination. Keep the IRB attribution, denomination and full face visible in a photograph. A Charles III portrait or another dollar amount points to a different dated identity that needs its own record.
Reverse: identify the back
The 2016 reverse shows a koala moving along a eucalyptus branch. The surrounding inscription identifies the Australian Koala, year, one-ounce size and 999 silver purity; the P mintmark identifies Perth. Ing Ing Jong designed this reverse. A koala subject alone does not distinguish ordinary bullion from proof, high relief, colour, gold or a larger silver coin.
History and purpose
The issuer archive confirms one-ounce bullion in every year 2007–2023. It separately lists half-ounce 50-cent issues in 2008–2015, ten-ounce ten-dollar issues in 2008–2015, and kilogram thirty-dollar issues from 2008 onward. Its 2015–16 annual report records .999 silver Koalas; its 2018–19 report records .9999. These sources demonstrate a purity change without assigning every intervening finish from a generic series heading. A 2018 high-relief proof is 32.60 mm maximum diameter with 6.00 mm thickness; it is not a current 40.90 mm bullion specimen.
How to identify this variant
The matched 2016 issuer reference sets a minimum gross mass of 31.135 g, maximum diameter of 40.60 mm and maximum thickness of 4.00 mm. These are specification limits rather than a promise that every specimen measures exactly those values. The catalogue describes a reeded edge. Photographs document appearance; measured mass, edge and dimensions can support screening but do not prove authenticity or an assay.
Understanding its metal content
Three matching 2016 one-ounce Koalas contain 3.000 fine troy ounces of silver. Their combined issuer minimum gross mass is 93.405 g. Use the stated one-ounce fine content directly; do not infer extra silver by multiplying a separately rounded minimum gross measurement. A later purity change does not make the 2016 coin .9999, and a one-kilogram or fractional issue cannot inherit a one-ounce quantity calculation.
Dates, varieties and composition changes
The pictured calculation-approved issue year is 2016. Actual annual one-ounce bullion years in inspected issuer records are 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Each has its own reverse. The separately inspected 2024, 2025 and 2026 ordinary issues use .9999 silver, minimum 31.107 g gross mass and maximum 40.90 mm diameter. Preserve finish and privy identification; annual issue existence alone does not establish a shared specification.
Melt value versus collector value
Preserve a special finish, original certificate, packaging and documented variety when describing a collection. Condition and collector demand may matter beyond fine silver. A maximum mintage is a production limit rather than proof of final sales or rarity. Avoid cleaning or polishing; a brilliant surface alone does not establish proof manufacture.
Authenticity and condition
Provide both complete faces, edge views and any original certificate. Compare the exact year, portrait, denomination, silver legend and finish to its actual issuer record. Measured dimensions can screen obvious mismatches but do not authenticate the coin or an unverified assay. The public product photograph is a reference, not certification of another specimen.
Selling this coin
Separate the 2016 .999 one-ounce bullion from later .9999 issues, smaller or larger sizes and special finishes. Include the full date, complete faces, edge and any original certificate in the CashForCoins photo-appraisal enquiry. A collector premium, coin condition and an actual purchase offer are separate from nominal fine silver content.
Sources and calculation methodology
The designated reference world-silver melt table does not list this modern family, and no matching modern the reference numerical type was established in this review. The dated Perth-authored 2016 Koala/Kookaburra brochure supplies the exact ordinary one-ounce silver Koala specification; its surviving public reference is a third-party mirror of the issuer document. The Australian Government’s Currency (Perth Mint) Determination 2015 (No. 1), Schedule 1, independently defines the ordinary 2016 Koala bullion design. Item 12 specifies at least 99.9% silver, a legal standard mass of 31.635 ±0.500 g, maximum diameter 40.60 mm and maximum thickness 4.00 mm. Its lower permitted mass is 31.135 g, matching the brochure minimum; the legal central value is not substituted for that minimum. Reverse R 6 identifies the 2016 Koala bullion design, with IJ and P inscriptions; O 2 identifies the Elizabeth II/IRB obverse. The original issuer annual archive independently confirms 2016 ordinary one-ounce production. The paired Numista photograph is independently released by coinman1 under CC BY 4.0. Current .9999 issuer inputs remain separately documented and are not assigned to this 2016 .999 coin.
The actual dated representative photographs and independent reuse permissions were inspected. Complete faces are retained, with WebP conversion and no enlargement, retouching or synthetic reconstruction; joined source images are split with complete rims. These photographs do not assay another specimen. Actual staging rendering and calculator acceptance are separately recorded.
